Really – wasn’t it a Porsche – a Porsche 911 in Japan? Didn’t the car make a couple of trips to Germany because the owner somehow got Porsche to assist him? And in no small way, they used some Formula 1 parts on it?! But isn’t that kind of cheating? Getting someone else to build it for you.
The most famous of the Midnight Club’s cars was a highly-modified 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo 3.3 Coupe nicknamed the Blackbird. The Blackbird had 601 hp and was the fastest car in the group. The official top speed was 308km/h, but it went 320 (198mph) + on the highways in Japan and 340km/h in Germany. It was owned by the Midnight Club’s leader, Yoshida Eiichi. This car made several trips to Porsche in Germany for tuning but also there was some F1 tech used.
Engine: Air-cooled flat-six (610PS [601hp]at 6200 RPM), turbo (KKK K33s), Mahle forged pistons, Porsche titanium race con rod, race exhaust, race intercooler, twin plug ignition. Max RPM 7500, 715 NM (527 lb-ft) torque at 6600 RPM.
Out of all the racing crews hitting the asphalt, the Mid Night Club was the most exclusive bunch with their tuned Porsche 911 Turbos, Nissan Skyline GT-Rs, Mazda RX-7s, and even a few Ferraris and Lamborghinis. The Club regularly stomped rival gangs during high-speed sprints around Tokyo’s Wangan (Bayshore Route) and other parts of the expansive Shuto Expressway. Such a reputation understandably made the Mid Night Club an incredibly desirable circle to be part of.
Remember this was the 90’s.
